The French word "Terroir" is not restricted to Wine. It refers to a specific element of Geology, Soil, and Climate combined with a tradition of Human Skill and Talent. Terroir is linked with History and Folklore and found Worldwide. However, the thorough study of Terroir has been more affluent in France than anywhere else. Terroir is used to describe the soil that produces specific Wines and by derived meaning, a certain earthy taste that characterizes great wines. In the French countryside, the notion of Terroir is omnipresent on the markets and is used in relation to produce, cheese, sausage and meats, mushrooms and truffles, etc., as well as Wine.
